As far as the records show,Dodge only built 150 examples of the L023 Monsters !
Previously owned by Lou Mancini of Mancini Racing, and an Original Grand Spaulding car autographed by Mr. Norm.
Possibly one of the most original LO23 Hemi Darts in existence with only 3,799 miles on the clock.
Built at the Hamtramck, Michigan plant then sent to Hurst Performance for the final conversion with the under rated 426/425 HP race Hemi engine. Shipped from Chrysler’s Marine and Industrial Division,the unique 426
HEMI engines had been built offline by hand-picked technicians. The HEMI
blocks were iron with a 4.250-inch bore and a 3.750-inch stroke,12.5:1 compression and aluminum heads.
It features a magnesium Cross- Ram intake manifold with two big Holley Carb's,a solid lifter camshaft and an early transistorized ignition system.
The Hemi exhales through big tube Hooker headers connected to 3 -inch pipes that end at a pair of mufflers,but there are cutouts for trips down the strip.
Handling the neck breaking torque from the Hemi is a race prepped 727-Torqueflite transmission,it's controlled by a Hurst shifter mounted in a custom console.A Dana 60 rear-end with 4:10 gears and a spool get it to the ground.
Other features of the L023 option include:
Front disc brakes,aluminum lightweight body panels,A-100 Van bucket seats,backseat delete,non functional quarter glass & plastic door glass with no regulators, just adjustment straps.
These cars were capable of low 9-second ET's in the quarter mile with little effort .As a final nod towards the audacity of these machines,Chrysler placed a sticker on the L023 cars that stated, "This vehicle was not manufactured for use on Public Streets, Roads or Highways,and does not conform to Motor Vehicle Safety Standards".
There are only a few muscle cars that are legendary,The 1968 Hurst HEMI Dodge Dart code L023 is said to be the fastest muscle car of all time, until the age of the Hell Cat's & Demon's!
